Komodo National ParkThis week on Mermaid II we had a dive charter group of 20 friendly guests from ‘Ocean Geeks’ dive club in the US. They were all armed with an array of underwater cameras, and eager to get out to Komodo and photograph the incredible marine life!

Starting out in the north of Komodo National Park, we had a super fishy dive at ‘Crystal Rock’ with abundant schooling surgeonfish, sweetlips, and trevally, as well as a close encounter with a pair of spotted eagle rays that have been resident at this site for a while now. A dive at ‘Shotgun’ followed this, where our guests got acquainted with Komodo’s milder currents and enjoyed a nice drift dive with passing sharks, turtles, and schools of snapper.

In the south of the park, ‘Manta Alley’ was on top form with 9 mantas circling above the cleaning station for over one hour. The dive site ‘Tatawa Besar’ was a particular favourite for all our guests, and they chose to do two dives here – at slack tide this is one of the most peaceful and beautiful sites in the park.

Our guests this week were all big fans of macro photography and loved some of the macro dive sites and all the night dives this week which were packed full of interesting critters – the highlights were a pair of roughsnout ghostpipefish, juvenile flamboyant cuttlefish, numerous little frogfish, pughead pipefish, and an incredibly rare green and white hairy shrimp!

Komodo has something for everyone, big or small, and always leaves you wanting more!
